Download in.between

A private dream journal for your Mac, your iPhone, and your browser. The desktop app is signed and notarized. The iPhone app is on the App Store. The web app needs no install at all.

What you are downloading

in.between is a place to keep the night: the dream you half remember, the leftover feeling, the 2am thought with nowhere else to go. You write or speak whatever survived waking, and Nalani — the companion who lives here — asks one honest question at a time. There is no streak, no score, and no feed.

Which Mac build to take

Desktop is Mac only. The button at the top of this page gives you the universal build, which is the right answer for almost everyone — it carries both architectures in one file and runs natively on either. If you would rather take the exact build for your machine, the release lists them under the button when it ships them separately.

  • Universal — Apple Silicon and Intel in a single download. This is the default.
  • Apple Silicon — M1 and later. Any Mac sold in the last few years.
  • Intel — Macs made before the Apple Silicon transition.
  • The version number and file size print under the button, so you can see the size before you start the download.

Signed and notarized

The Mac build is code-signed and notarized with Apple. That means Gatekeeper recognises it: you open it the ordinary way, without right-clicking past an unidentified-developer warning and without turning off a security setting to let it run. Drag it to Applications, sign in with the account you already use, and your journals are there.

No Windows or Linux build

We would rather say so plainly than let you hunt for a link that is not there. There is no Windows installer and no Linux package. On those machines, open in.between in a browser instead — it is the same rooms, the same companion, and the same journals, with nothing to install.

iPhone is on the App Store

The iPhone button at the top of this page opens the App Store listing. Install it, sign in with the account you already use, and the night you start sitting up is the night you finish at the desk. The browser still works on the phone if you would rather not install anything — the phone is where most nights actually start, and you write the one image that stayed and put the screen back down.

One account, one night

The night you start on the phone is the night you finish at the desk. Everything hangs off a single account, so the fragment you sent while you were still sitting up is the first line of the journal you open when there is a table and a quieter hour. You are not keeping a bedside version and a later version that only look related.

The same is true of the companion. Nalani remembers your nights, not a screen's nights — the person who showed up on Tuesday is the person she can ask about later in the week, whichever glass you happen to be holding.

What is in the app

  • Journals — one night is one thread, dated and searchable.
  • Index — the people, places, weather and feelings that keep coming back.
  • Paradigm — an infinite map where nights that belong together draw their own threads.
  • Markers — the wall of stills your nights leave behind.
  • Companion — Nalani, who you can type with or talk to out loud.

Private, and deletable

Your entries are yours. We do not sell them, there is no audience, and writing here is not posting. You can delete a night, a journal, or the whole house whenever you want — from the app or from the web.

Answers

Which Mac build should I download?
The main button gives you the universal build, which runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs. When a release also ships them separately, an Apple Silicon build (M1 and later) and an Intel build are listed under the button, so you can take the exact one if you would rather.
Is the Mac app signed and notarized?
Yes. The build is code-signed and notarized with Apple, so macOS opens it without the unidentified-developer warning. Drag it to Applications and sign in with the account you already use on the web.
Is there a Windows or Linux version?
Not right now. The desktop app is Mac only. On Windows, Linux, or a machine you do not want to install anything on, use in.between in the browser — it is the same house, with nothing to download.
Is the iPhone app on the App Store?
Yes. The iPhone button on this page opens the App Store listing. Sign in with the account you already use, and the night you start sitting up is the night you finish at the desk. The browser still works on the phone if you would rather not install anything.
Do I have to install anything to start?
No. in.between runs in the browser on both phone and desktop, and you can keep a full journal without ever downloading the Mac app. The app is for people who want it in the Dock.
Does one account cover phone, desk and web?
Yes. One account carries the night across all of them. The fragment you send while you are still sitting up is the first line of the journal you open at the desk later — the same night, not two entries that only look related.
Which version am I getting?
Whichever release is current. The button always points at the latest Mac build, and the version number and file size are printed underneath it, so you can see what you are about to download before you click.
